IHES is a private, non-profit advanced research institute in mathematics, theoretical physics and all related sciences. Renowned in the international scientific community, the Institute is located in France. Friends of IHES exists to increase the visibility of IHES in the United States, coordinate the network of current and former American visiting researchers to the Institute, and to raise funds for IHES. As part of your Corporate Responsibility strategy, your sponsorship will contribute to the Institute’s mission of advancing fundamental research. It will directly support the scientific activity of IHES, financing researchers from around the globe.
Why Support Friends of IHES?
- Today, America, remains the number one nationality hosted at IHES for research visits.
- The Institute is one of the rare places that offers total freedom of research to its residents.
- Basic research often leads to essential breakthroughs and IHES exists to keep it alive and thriving.
- Theoretical sciences are one of the most powerful tools to answer the question “Where do we come from?”
- Genius belongs to no single nation. Be part of the international chain of knowledge and join the IHES network of donors.
WHY IS IHES UNIQUE?
Intellectual liberty is at the heart of what makes IHES the exceptional centre of fundamental research that it is. Its Permanent and Visiting Professors are free to pursue their interests in a spirit of total freedom and independence, completely unfettered from teaching duties and administrative responsibilities or concerns.
Courage and appetite for risk
Courage is what sets IHES apart. Not content with attracting those with established scientific reputations, of the 10 permanent professors in mathematics who have worked at IHES, an unprecedented 7 were awarded the Fields Medal while active at the Institute, proof positive of its remarkable consistency in identifying and nurturing exceptional talent.
Ever since its creation in 1958, IHES has been a community of scholars that values the opportunity to work together. Anchored by the five permanent professors, the intellectual life of the Institute is constantly stimulated and invigorated by a programme of seminars and meetings, by the formation of research groups focusing on specific areas of interest and by the day-to-day personal interactions that are part of life at the Institute.
Understanding the very meaning of our world depends on increasingly sophisticated mathematics. How do we reconcile quantum and general physics a century after Einstein? What is the real nature of the quantum world? What came before time and matter? Finding the answers to these and similar fundamental questions has the potential to impact the lives of millions of people.
